Recently, a long list of people running for the Left Party in this autumn’s election were revealed to have expressed hatred against Jews and support for various terrorist groups. According to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M), the party is infiltrated by Islamists—something party leader Nooshi Dadgostar disagrees with.

Ulf Kristersson directed sharp criticism at Nooshi Dadgostar and the Left Party following the recent attention surrounding the party’s local candidates. In a debate on SVT Agenda, Kristersson argued that the recurring incidents cannot be dismissed as single mistakes, but instead point to a more widespread problem within the party. He also believes that they have allowed the glorification of terrorism to thrive within the party.

– What’s new is the volume and that it almost appears to be an infiltration of Islamists from the Middle East, said Kristersson.

– It’s quite obvious that the Left Party has used this to gain votes in certain groups.

The background is the investigations that have revealed that several people with connections to the Left Party have expressed support for extremist movements, spread antisemitic messages, or otherwise made statements that have sparked strong criticism. After the revelations, a number of candidates have been removed from the ballots or have left their positions.

During the debate, the Prime Minister claimed that the developments indicate that people with Islamist sympathies have gained influence in parts of the party. He argued that the situation does not concern a few individuals, but a recurring pattern that the Left Party must take more seriously.

“Indecent”

Dadgostar rejected the criticism and described the Prime Minister’s statements as unfounded. She pointed out that the party has acted against the individuals who were brought to attention and emphasized that the opinions in question do not represent the Left Party’s policy or values.

– Desperate from a prime minister who’s about to lose his job in three months, said Dadgostar.

– These are completely ridiculous statements and comments from a prime minister. I think it’s indecent.

At the same time, the Left Leader admitted that the party needs to strengthen its internal control procedures to prevent similar situations in the future.
