SD calls for zero tolerance against Islamism in Sweden: "Medieval values"

The Sweden Democrats want Sweden to adopt a much tougher stance against Islamism, describing the ideology as one of the most serious threats to the democratic society. In an opinion piece, party secretary Mattias Bäckström Johansson states that the government cooperation has already taken several steps to counter this development and that further measures are expected.

SD, together with the government, has recently commissioned an investigation to map the spread of political Islam and Islamism in Sweden. The aim is to analyze the extent of religious radicalization and the potential consequences that Islamist influence and infiltration may have for Swedish society.

The party points out that Islamism is distinct from the religion of Islam and describes it as a political ideology aiming to reshape society based on religious principles. At the same time, it is emphasized that freedom of religion must be protected, but not used as a shield for anti-democratic forces or activities that undermine Swedish laws and democratic values.

In the opinion piece, SD highlights several reforms that have been implemented or initiated during the term. Among others, a reinforced anti-terrorism legislation is mentioned, as well as stricter opportunities to deport individuals deemed to be security threats, and increased authority for state agencies to act against extremist environments.

The party believes that the work must now continue with more measures targeted at Islamist networks and organizations. They also want to ensure that “not a single krona of our taxpayers’ money goes to promote Islamization, medieval values, or terrorism.”

Furthermore, mosques where Islamism, anti-Semitism, or the glorification of terrorism is preached are to be demolished, and those responsible prosecuted and deported wherever possible.

One of the greatest threats

The Sweden Democrats also emphasize that a clearer defense of democratic values is required and that society should not accept parallel structures or activities that hinder integration and the rule of law.

The stated ambition is for Sweden to have zero tolerance for Islamism while maintaining constitutionally protected freedom of religion.

“Our firm view is that Islamism constitutes one of the greatest threats to Sweden in modern times,” conclude Mattias Bäckström Johansson and MP Johnny Svedin in the op-ed.
