If Swedish citizens went to the polls today, the red-green opposition parties would have a clear advantage over the current government coalition. According to SCB’s latest survey, the Social Democrats, the Left Party, and the Green Party would together be able to secure a majority in the Riksdag—without any support from the Centre Party.
This is revealed in Statistics Sweden’s latest major party preference survey, where the Social Democrats, Left Party, Green Party, and Centre Party together receive 55.2 percent of the votes.
The Tidö parties—the Moderates, Christian Democrats, and Liberals—as well as their cooperation partner the Sweden Democrats, meanwhile reach a combined 42.6 percent.
This means the difference between the political blocs amounts to a full 12.6 percentage points.
Liberals’ Crash
The party facing the most serious problems in the survey is the Liberals. The party records only 2.5 percent support, clearly falling below the four percent parliamentary threshold.
If the Liberals do not manage to cross the threshold, the distribution of seats would give the Social Democrats, Left Party, and Green Party a total of 180 seats—enough for an outright majority.
Even a coalition between the Social Democrats, Centre Party, and Green Party—without the Left Party—would result in a strong parliamentary position with 170 seats.
On the other side, the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, and Christian Democrats would together reach 147 seats.
S Declines
The Social Democrats remain the country’s largest party with 33.9 percent of voter support. Despite this, the result actually marks a decrease compared to last year’s corresponding SCB poll, when the party stood at 36.2 percent.
The Moderates also decline, receiving 17.3 percent—down one percentage point from the previous poll.
The Sweden Democrats land at 18.3 percent, making them still larger than the Moderates in the survey.
Among the smaller parties, the Left Party rises to 8.6 percent, while the Green Party gets 6.6 percent and the Centre Party 6.1 percent. The Christian Democrats reach 4.5 percent, thus passing the threshold by a narrow margin.
