The Social Democrats’ and Green Party’s time in power continues to make big holes in Swedish households’ wallets as electricity prices soar.
Due to an ongoing combination of cold weather, weak winds, and low levels in hydropower reservoirs, electricity prices rose on Thursday morning to just over five kronor per kilowatt hour in electricity zones 3 and 4, while zones 1 and 2 in northern Sweden had lower prices.
At the same time, the high prices are expected to remain, partly because there is little water in the major water reservoirs and bottlenecks in the electricity grid.
Increased by 21 percent
On Friday, new inflation figures will be released by Statistics Sweden (SCB), which also show that electricity prices increased by 21 percent in January—the largest increase since November 2024.
– Rising electricity prices and rent increases were strong contributors to the rate of inflation according to the CPI in January, says Mikael Nordin, price statistician at SCB.
The sharp rise in electricity prices in January contributed to a clear price increase compared to January 2025. Overall, electricity prices accounted for 0.7 percentage points of the inflation rate according to the CPI, making it one of the most significant contributors among all goods and services in the CPI basket.
