US President Donald Trump and his administration are increasingly concerned about the ever more restricted freedom of speech in Europe, and there are now plans to provide Europeans with access to information that their respective governments and authorities want to withhold from citizens.

Last year, Vice President JD Vance chastised Europe’s leaders and warned about declining freedom of speech and increasingly intrusive censorship. This year, it was Secretary of State Marco Rubio who warned of the state of the Western world.

The US State Department is reportedly in the process of developing an online portal to allow people in Europe and elsewhere to access content banned by their governments.

According to reports, the portal will be hosted on freedom.gov, and there have been discussions about including a virtual private network (VPN) feature to make a user’s traffic appear as if it is coming from the US. User activity on the site will not be tracked.

Digital freedom a priority

The project is led by Sarah Rogers, Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy, and was supposed to be unveiled at the security conference in Munich last week, but was delayed.

In a statement to Reuters, a spokesperson for the State Department said that the US government does not have a specific program to bypass censorship in Europe, but added that digital freedom is a priority, and this includes the dissemination of privacy and censorship-circumvention technologies such as VPNs.
