Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claims that Brussels is pushing for Ukraine to become an EU member as early as 2027 and that the country could receive up to around 17 trillion SEK in economic support by 2040. He refers to a confidential document said to have been presented at an EU summit in Brussels.

Orbán recently stated that Ukraine is expected to receive approximately 8.45 trillion SEK in funding over the coming ten years — a sum which, according to Hungarian media, is said to include EU funds, American support, and private investments.

This is also confirmed by Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Taras Kachka, who stated on January 20 that Ukraine is expected to receive about 8.45 trillion SEK as part of a reconstruction package being negotiated between Ukraine, the USA, and the EU, within the framework of a broader 20-point peace plan.

According to the same sources, Ukraine could additionally receive further support of around 8.55 trillion SEK, mainly intended for military aid, which could be provided until 2040. This is reported by, among others, the Ukrainian newspaper Kyiv Independent.

Orbán, who has long been critical of Ukraine’s EU application and extensive support to Ukraine under the leadership of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warns that the plan involves such large economic burdens that the EU’s future could be threatened for a long time to come.

The Hungarian prime minister has further asserted that the EU’s secret document, according to him, shows that Brussels is striving for Ukraine, which became a candidate country in 2022, to become an EU member already in 2027.

According to Orbán, support for Ukraine should be a voluntary choice for each member state and not a mandatory responsibility for the entire EU.
