Every summer, the state media covers the fires in Europe, which are claimed to have increased. But the actual cause of many of them is rarely addressed.

In mid-August, Greek firefighters were battling to contain more than 20 wildfires. Since the beginning of the year, around 45,000 hectares of forest, shrubland, and farmland have been destroyed by wildfires. The Greek meteorological agency has warned that the wildfire season is far from over.

According to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, more than 300 people have been arrested suspected of arson so far this year, and a few weeks ago, the Greek government approved a new law imposing stricter penalties for arson.

Previously, perpetrators often received lenient sentences such as suspended sentences or small fines, but according to Mitsotakis, this era of leniency is over, stating: “The impunity is over.”

Under the new legislation, arsonists now face mandatory prison sentences and high fines ranging from 30,000 to 200,000 euros. Additionally, authorities can seize the assets of those convicted.

14-year-old arsonist

Portugal has also been hit by wildfires this summer, and like in Greece, there are suspected arsonists. In one case, a 14-year-old has come forward and admitted to setting several fires.

The motive, revealed during questioning, is said to be frustration over poor school results and difficulties in social life. At the same time, the police have not ruled out that the boy may have been part of a larger group. The case has been handed over to the prosecutor’s office, which will refer it to a special court for children and family matters.

The police investigation began after several fires broke out in the same geographical area during the summer, causing great concern among the local population and destroying large areas of forest.

So far this summer, 52 people have been arrested on suspicion of arson in Portugal.
