The three-year journalism education at JMK – the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication at Stockholm University is being halted. The quality is so poor that it needs to be redone.
The admissions for the program next autumn are being stopped after a review. The scientific deficiencies that have been discovered are described as so significant that everything needs to be redone from scratch.
“To meet the measures presented in the review, the content of the program needs to be revised. This is a process that will take time. Therefore, the admission to the program for autumn 2026 is paused, with the aim of being able to admit new students in autumn 2027,” writes study director Jimmy Pettersson in an email sent to JMK students on Friday afternoon.

The halt means, among other things, that the final term’s thesis will be replaced with a bachelor’s thesis, and journalism students in their final term in spring 2027 or 2028 will be required to write a scientific thesis instead of a journalistic thesis.

Many upset
Many journalism students affected are upset.
“The students have been deceived, and the decision was made behind our backs without any transparency,” writes a person to Journalisten.
