An individual in a care home in Dalarna suffered extensive burns earlier this year after an accident in the bathroom. The injuries were so severe that an amputation later became necessary.

The incident has now led the municipality to file a lex Sarah report with the Health and Social Care Inspectorate, IVO. This is reported by Sveriges Television.

The person has epilepsy and is paralyzed on one side. According to the routines in place at the facility, the person was allowed to be alone for a short time in the bathroom to brush their teeth. It was during this time that the accident occurred.

A blockage developed in the sink at the same time as hot water was still flowing from the tap. When the drain could not handle the water, it spilled onto the floor.

The person was exposed to the hot water and suffered serious burns on one leg. An ambulance was called to the scene and the person was taken to hospital for medical care. Despite efforts to treat the injuries, the damage was so severe that the leg later had to be amputated.

Following the incident, the municipality’s care administration has reviewed what happened and chose to report the incident to IVO under lex Sarah.
