The red-green opposition is making a big deal out of the Tidö government having made everyday life a bit easier for Swedish households by lowering fuel prices, which in turn has led to slightly higher emissions. However, the fact that Sweden is already climate neutral doesn’t seem to matter to them.
Even if all of Sweden were to shut down, it would hardly be noticeable in a :censored:6:cdd6bbaa89: context, yet the red-green parties still believe that it’s always the Swedish people who must be forced into draconian and expensive measures to save the planet. In addition, Sweden is already the best in the EU when it comes to net emissions per capita, something that a few percentage points here or there doesn’t change.
Another aspect of the environmental issue that seems to have been overlooked or ignored is that Sweden is already climate neutral. According to new statistics from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Swedish forest’s absorption of carbon dioxide increased by eight million tons in 2024 compared to 2023.
“Sweden as a nation therefore has no net emission of carbon dioxide—in fact, Sweden collects and binds 6.8 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year,” notes Lantbruksnytt.
With continued active forestry, no other measures are needed to reach the national climate goals.

The industry organization Swedish Forest Industries views a climate-neutral Sweden positively but is still not satisfied.
– The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s new statistics show that Sweden is climate neutral. The absorption of carbon is even slightly greater than the emissions. That’s positive, but climate efforts must focus on reducing emissions and phasing out fossil fuels so that Sweden can increase its :censored:6:cdd6bbaa89: climate contribution, says Viveka Beckeman, CEO of Swedish Forest Industries, to Lantbruksnytt.
According to Beckeman, the statistics are no surprise and she points out that recent years’ weather and decreased pest outbreaks have been favorable for forest growth. Now she wants to see continued efforts for long-term growth in the forest.
In connection with producing the latest statistics, the Environmental Protection Agency has changed its calculation method and also updated figures from previous years.
