Barcelona was shaken this weekend by what appears to be yet another brutal Muslim terrorist attack on European soil. During the assault, the man reportedly shouted ‘God is great’ in Arabic.

Around 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, a young woman was murdered in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium, by what seems to be a migrant who randomly stabbed a person nearby. The suspected murderer, wearing jeans, a hoodie, and a large black backpack, was arrested later that day in the Les Corts district.

As of Sunday, police were still working to determine whether the man knew his victim, whose age and nationality have not yet been disclosed. However, police confirmed there was no romantic connection between the two and are operating under the theory that it was a random stabbing.

The woman was described in local media as young and of Asian origin. Reports say she was stabbed in the neck, chest, and stomach. A 50-year-old man was also injured while trying to intervene. Paramedics were dispatched to the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save the woman.

Witnesses had seen a man standing and waving a large knife in the street and showing “signs of nervousness” prior to the bloodbath. After the murder, two days of official mourning were declared.

Heightened Terror Alert

The attack in Spain comes just days after a knife attack on a pair of Jewish men in the British capital, London. Police there were quick to confirm it was a terrorist act.

In the wake of the attack, UK authorities have raised the terror threat level to ‘severe’, which means that an attack is highly likely within the next six months. This is the second highest level on a five-point scale.

The increased threat follows yesterday’s stabbing attack in Golders Green in North London, but it is not solely the result of that attack. The terrorist threat level in the UK has been rising for some time, driven by a surge in broader Islamist and right-wing extremist terror threats from individuals and small groups based in the UK.

The last time the threat level was this high was in November 2021 after the bombing at Liverpool Women’s Hospital and the murder of Sir David Amess.

Enhancing Protection

In response to the attack, the government is investing an additional £25 million to protect the Jewish community in the country. This brings total funding up to £58 million this year, described as the largest investment a government has made to protect the Jewish community in history. The money will go toward increased police presence as well as boosting security at synagogues, schools, and community centers.

There will also be investment in expanding Project Servator by deploying specialized plainclothes police officers trained to detect suspicious activity and identify individuals preparing to commit serious crimes.

Legislation will also be accelerated in the coming weeks to crack down on individuals and groups conducting hostile activities for foreign states as well as those acting as their agents.
