On May Day, the streets were once again filled with slogans about struggle and responsibility from the Social Democrats and other left-wing groups. But when concrete questions were posed about Social Democratic policies in Malmö, the engaged representatives were met with silence.

Nils Littorin, who leads the Malmölistan party, took the opportunity on May Day to confront several Social Democratic representatives about the local policies in Malmö. The questions concerned, among other things, rising rents and increased parking fees—decisions that have sparked local criticism.

This is not the first time Littorin has raised these issues. Already the previous year he drew attention to how the municipal housing company MKB Fastighets AB had implemented rent hikes in the city, while at the same time Social Democrats, the Left Party, and the Green Party participated in demonstrations against the very same rising rents on Malmö’s streets.

Nils Littorin confronted speakers and party officials on-site last year to get answers on how they view this reality. But no one wanted to respond—instead, the confrontation led to irritation.

A man in a shirt from the Byggnads trade union told Littorin it is illegal to ask critical questions to party representatives. He further threatened that he would come home to Nils and “stick a mic up”—but stopped himself when he noticed the camera.

The situation largely repeated itself during this year’s May Day events. On one occasion, a woman attempted to dismiss Nils Littorin by suggesting it would be illegal to question participants in the political demonstration, which included the Social Democratic Youth League (SSU) among others. Several other Social Democratic representatives were unable or unwilling to answer questions about the policies being pursued in Malmö.

— In my view, this is the biggest and most deceitful party we have in Sweden, Littorin concluded after his visit to the Social Democrats’ event.
