The Social Democrat leader and former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has come under fire from the nuclear-armed nation to the east after a statement about how, through NATO’s nuclear capabilities, we could bomb Russia “to pieces.” Now, the Russian Foreign Ministry is responding harshly.
The background to the exchange between the Social Democratic Party leader and Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, is that Magdalena Andersson, in an interview earlier this week, implied that EU/NATO countries currently could bomb their eastern neighbor with nuclear weapons.
– Even today, Europe has nuclear weapons, so we could bomb Russia to pieces, Magdalena Andersson said to TV4.

But the main point of the Social Democrat leader’s statement was not primarily to threaten Russia, but to criticize the Tidö government for their plans to open talks with France about the possibility of allowing French nuclear weapons in Sweden.
Andersson questions why the dialogue is taking place within a smaller group of NATO countries, when EU countries already have significant nuclear deterrence via NATO as a whole – which, she argues, could today wipe out Russia.
“Who are you to threaten Russia?”
The statement has thus reached Russia’s Foreign Ministry, which during a press Q&A on Friday lashed out at Magdalena Andersson (S).
– I want to ask, who are you, Magdalena Andersson, to threaten Russia with nuclear weapons and say that nothing would remain because it would be bombed to rubble, said Maria Zakharova and continued:
Zakharova further added that Andersson should instead focus on dealing with the problems in Greenland, which, she claims, literally needs such defenders. This was a biting reference to the fact that the US, led by President Donald Trump, has claimed that Greenland belongs to the US.
