Talks between the US and Iran took a step forward after a new meeting in Switzerland on Sunday. Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan report that the parties have agreed on a roadmap with the goal of reaching a more comprehensive agreement within 60 days. At the same time, tough statements from US President Donald Trump have created new tensions in the process.

According to information from the negotiations, the US and Iran have discussed, among other things, the nuclear energy issue, the situation in Lebanon, and security in the Strait of Hormuz—a key :censored:6:cdd6bbaa89: shipping route for oil exports. The parties are also said to have agreed to establish direct channels of communication to decrease the risk of military incidents.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the talks as successful and mentioned “significant progress.” Iranian media report that certain relief measures regarding oil exports and frozen assets may be on the way, even though American representatives have yet to confirm any concrete concessions.

Despite the claimed diplomatic progress, the atmosphere has worsened due to several statements from Trump. The president has warned Iran of consequences if the country continues to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz or if Iran-backed groups continue their activities in the region.

At one point, Iranian representatives reportedly temporarily walked away from the negotiating table after Trump’s remarks. Trump has simultaneously claimed that the US is close to a historic agreement with Iran and previously described the process as being in its “final stages.”

Negotiations continue

The ongoing negotiations take place against the backdrop of the conflict that in 2025 led to extensive American and Israeli attacks on Iranian targets, including several of the country’s most important nuclear facilities. Trump has repeatedly claimed that these facilities were destroyed, while the issue of Iran’s future nuclear program has continued to be a central point in subsequent negotiations.

This spring, a ceasefire was reached between the US, Iran, and Israel, but several issues have remained unresolved. Not least, the situation in Lebanon and control over the Strait of Hormuz have repeatedly threatened to reignite the conflict.

Technical working groups are now expected to continue negotiations during the week. The goal is to reach a broader agreement within two months, covering the nuclear issue, regional security, and economic relief for Iran.

Despite the positive signals, many analysts believe the road ahead remains uncertain—especially due to the recurring verbal confrontations between Washington and Tehran.

Trump is not happy about how the media reports on the conflict:
