In 2025, alcohol consumption in Sweden decreased by approximately 2.6 percent compared to 2024. This is shown by preliminary data from the Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs, CAN.
Over the past 20 years, the decline has been about one percent per year, but in recent years it has accelerated, and last year it was thus more than twice as high.
“There has been a trend of decreased alcohol consumption for several years, a trend that continued into 2025,” says Björn Trolldal, investigator and researcher at CAN.
“We are seeing a gradual decrease averaging about one percent per year over the past 20 years, but this decline has intensified in recent years.”

Regarding registered consumption, it was primarily sales at Systembolaget that declined in 2025. Last year, smuggled alcohol also decreased sharply, down 29 percent and by 81 percent over the previous five years. At the same time, online purchases increased significantly.
In total, Swedish citizens over the age of 15 consumed on average 8.2 liters of pure alcohol last year. In 2024, the amount was 8.4 liters.
