Sweden is once again the world’s top nation in junior hockey. After a dramatic final day, the Junior Crowns stand as champions at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship—for the third time in history.

Sweden remained undefeated throughout the tournament. Four straight victories in the group stage were followed by wins against Latvia, the USA, Finland, and most recently the Czech Republic.

The final initially looked to be a comfortable path to gold, but in the final moments the Czechs narrowed the score and the match became dramatic.

With eight seconds left, Ivar Stenberg finally secured the 4–2 win with an empty net goal. The arena erupted in celebration and the gold medal was guaranteed.

– This is the best team I’ve ever played with, what an incredible group. Everyone chips in, we play for each other. People are under so much pressure before the draft and hell if I know, but they play for the team and give everything to win. That’s what you see out there today. I’m just so impressed, so proud, said team captain Jack Berglund.

Sweden’s World Junior Gold

The Junior Crowns’ World Championship Titles

  • January 2, 1981 – Sweden’s first World Junior gold
  • January 6, 2012 – The second gold at the World Juniors
  • January 6, 2026 – The third gold, after a 14-year wait

The 2026 gold is Sweden’s first World Junior title in 14 years.

But there will be no celebration in Stockholm. A severe snowstorm in Amsterdam has halted the team’s planned return journey. Currently, it is unclear when the junior national team will be able to return home to Sweden.
