Last week, Samnytt reported on Sundsvall, where the municipality’s finances are so poor that increased fees for nursing homes have been proposed, and the elderly residents could be forced to start paying for the toilet paper they use. This is a solution the Sweden Democrats oppose.

According to Social Democrat Mikael Westin, chairman of the Health and Care Committee, this is an increase they “may not want to make” but one that is necessary given the financial situation. The average increase is 286 kronor per month and covers things such as rent for medical aids, as well as costs for items like laundry detergent, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies.

Sundsvall municipality is governed by the Social Democrats, the Centre Party, and the Left Party in a majority coalition.

This kind of solution is something the Sweden Democrats are against, and they voted no to the proposal for a consumption fee.

Kevin Sahlin is chairman and group leader for SD Sundsvall. He tells Samnytt that, according to calculations by the municipal executive office, the fee—combined with increases in other charges—would result in the municipality’s revenues increasing by 2.3 million kronor.

– These funds, we believe, are provided through our welfare guarantee, a special initiative included in our proposal for the municipal budget, in which we allocate additional resources to the Health and Care Committee’s budget framework, says Sahlin.

This initiative totals 253.8 million kronor, which, in addition to these budget reinforcements, also includes an investment in the SSK guarantee. By approving a proper budget, Sundsvall’s elderly would not have to be burdened with these unnecessary fees, he stresses.

– It is clear evidence that the Social Democrats’ mismanagement of the finances has led to facing 3,204 kronor per year in higher fees for special housing! It is remarkable and completely out of touch with reality!

– We would have much preferred if Sundsvall municipality was governed by our budget so that welfare would get the funding it clearly needs and deserves!
