A teacher at a school in Gothenburg asked a male student to change out of the Muslim festive attire he came to school in, directly from an Eid celebration. The incident was reported to the Equality Ombudsman (DO) and resulted in the school being forced to pay 90,000 kronor to the student. Samnytt can show the complete DO report.
According to DO, the student has been “subjected to harassment” and a “particularly serious violation.” The school’s management also receives criticism from the authority for “not fulfilling its obligation to investigate the situation and take action” against the teacher.

The school argued that it had handled the matter satisfactorily by talking to the student’s guardian, but DO thinks differently.
At the time of the incident, the student obeyed the teacher’s request and changed into other clothes. The reason for the reprimand was that the religious clothing was “inappropriate” in the non-denominational environment that the school should be and was “provocative” to non-Muslims.
DO has demanded 90,000 kronor in damages, which the school agreed to pay on December 17.
It is evident from DO documents that the complainant believes the incident involves “racism, stereotypes, Islamophobia, and discrimination”.
