According to the calculations of the Swedish Pensions Agency, most pensioners will have more money left in their wallets next year, with the amount ranging up to 1,500 kronor after tax. The increase is welcomed, but some had hoped for more.

At the turn of the year, many pensioners will see an increase in their total pension, including both the national pension and occupational pension, ranging between 330 kronor and 1,530 kronor per month.

– The income pension for 2025 is increasing more than inflation. Next year, the premium pension also contributes a historically large increase to the total pension for the majority. Therefore, most pensioners will see a total pension increase that on average exceeds the development of prices, says Alma Masic, an analyst at the Swedish Pensions Agency.

The size of the increase for an individual is influenced by various factors.

The income and supplementary pension will increase by 4.0 (1.0) percent, on average 316 – 796 (80 – 190) kronor before tax. The 4.0 percent increase corresponds to income development of 5.6 percent after deducting 1.6 percent for advance tax.

Individuals born in 1938 or later are also covered by the premium pension. The premium pension will change by 11.7 – 28.1 (-3.9 – 14.6) percent, which corresponds to 25 – 557 (-26 – 218) kronor per month before tax.

The guaranteed pension and certain occupational pensions will increase by the change in the price base amount, which is 2.6 (9.1) percent. The guaranteed pension will change by -92 – 73 kronor per month before tax.

Must be more rewarding to work

At the Swedish Pensioners’ Association, they welcome the increases but would have liked to see more. They point out that the problem of it being too unrewarding for pensioners who have worked their whole lives, compared to those who have worked little or not at all, remains.

– In practice, only pensioners who have been high-income earners can expect their work efforts to have an impact on their pension. Of course, it must also be reflected in the pension envelope for a nursing assistant, teacher, or warehouse worker that they have worked, says Eva Eriksson, the President of the Swedish Pensioners’ Association.
