At the Granliden nursing home in Gothenburg, there are differing opinions about the situation for the elderly residents. While the staff point out extensive deficiencies, the City of Gothenburg seems to believe everything is functioning adequately.
Residents who have not been allowed to shower for several weeks and have been found soaked in urine in their beds are just a couple of examples of the deficiencies that staff have repeatedly reported.
A closer review of the misconduct reveals that about thirty incident reports have been filed during 2024 and 2025. These involve soaked beds and elderly found wet with urine up to their necks, and in some cases, there was even feces in the beds.
About half the deviations concern cleaning, with elderly residents not having had their rooms cleaned for several weeks.

According to acting department manager Sofia Faström, however, nothing out of the ordinary was found when looking at the reported deviations and the assessment is that “the care has been good.”
The City of Gothenburg’s report admits that there have been shortcomings in handling of the deviations but also states that similar “challenges” exist in other operations within the municipality. Faström also concedes that they need to work on the quality of care.

Conflict Among the Staff
The majority of the deviations have never been reviewed to determine if they should be reported further to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate, IVO. Instead, other measures have been deemed sufficient — although it is not always clear what these are, as documentation is also lacking.
At the same time, there is something of a schism between the day and night staff, with the night staff rejecting accusations that they are neglectful and, for example, do not change the elderly residents’ diapers.
– Night staff have always heard it, that we haven’t changed them and the residents have lain in wet beds and we just rest. That’s nonsense, we do our jobs, says an assistant nurse to Arbetet.
Previously, conflicts among the staff led to security guards being called to patrol the nursing home around the clock to secure the work environment and prevent crime.
