Two asylum-seeking teenagers were arrested on suspicion of assaulting and raping a girl who filmed herself being kidnapped. The video footage is described as so vile that one of the perpetrators’ lawyer fears it would cause riots if made public.

The 17-year-old Afghans Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal had arrived in the UK just months earlier in small boats before attacking the 15-year-old in a park on May 10 this year.

In the three-minute video shown during the trial at Warwick Crown Court, the girl can be heard crying and saying ‘you’re going to rape me’ as she is dragged away from the place where she had been drinking with friends. The girl screamed for help and begged the perpetrators not to take her away.

Once there, she was forced to perform a sexual act on the boys in a secluded area before fleeing and filming more clips in connection with the incident. She was eventually found by a passerby who took her to a nearby police station where important forensic evidence could be secured.

‘The day I was raped changed me as a person. I am no longer a happy, carefree teenager. This was my first sexual experience,’ says the girl.

‘When I go out, I no longer feel safe, to the extent that I have started to avoid it completely. This has also affected my education and my school life at the worst possible time when I am supposed to take my GCSE exams.’

‘I hate that I am now seen as a victim, even though that is exactly what I am.’

Cultural differences

Jan Jahanzeb was sentenced to ten years and eight months in prison and Israr Niazal to nine years and ten months. Judge Sylvia de Bertodano said the Afghans have betrayed the interests of genuine refugees and ‘should feel deep and lasting shame’.

‘No child should have to endure the ordeal that [the victim] has suffered. In fact, you two have deprived her of her childhood,’ she added.

‘I accept that you come from a place with significant cultural differences compared to the UK, but I do not accept that either of you do not understand the concept of consent.’

Niazal’s lawyer Joshua Radcliffe called the video clips ‘truly appalling’ and added:

‘I have no doubt that if the public were exposed to it, we would have disorder.’

Could be deported

Robert Holt, who defended Jahanzeb, asked the judge to prevent the press from mentioning that the boys are Afghan asylum seekers.

Both have pleaded guilty, but as Niazal pleaded guilty the day before he turned 17, he is too young to risk deportation. However, Jahanzeb could be deported.

The judge later confirmed that she would recommend the Home Secretary to consider deporting both Jahanzeb and Niazal.
