An ordinary jogging session along Ribersborg Beach in Malmö ended in a brutal assault. A woman in her 50s was attacked from behind, dragged to the ground, and, according to the indictment, subjected to violence and sexual assault. Her cries for help were heard by nearby people who raised the alarm. The man is now being prosecuted, and he has previously been convicted of sexual offenses in Malmö. He is a Swedish citizen and therefore cannot be deported to Libya, despite, according to case information, requiring an interpreter in Arabic.

It was shortly after 10 p.m. on July 15 when the woman was running on the gravel path by the pond in Öresundsparken. At that time, it was already dark, but the area around Ribersborgsstigen is usually visited by many exercisers.

According to the woman’s interview statements, she was suddenly pushed in the back. Shortly after, the man allegedly grabbed her by the neck and pulled her to the ground. When she started calling for help, he tried to silence her by putting a hand in her mouth.

The woman said she experienced the choking as so forceful that she thought she would die. She also described being hit on her chest, face, arms, and genitals.

When, according to her account, the man began to tear at her clothes, she understood that he intended to rape her. He also tried to kiss her as she fought to break free. But despite the violence, she continued to scream and resist.

– I thought, I won’t accept this. I won’t give up, she said in a police interview.

Witnesses Heard the Screams

The woman’s cries were heard a bit away from the scene, where a family had parked their camper at the lot near the dog beach. When the father stepped outside for a cigarette, he heard sounds of what he perceived as a serious struggle.

He walked toward the sound and, on the way, encountered another man who had also reacted to the screams. Together, they called 112 and waited for police to arrive.

About 15 minutes later, the police arrived at the scene. By the bushes, the patrol saw a man lying on top of a woman on the ground. Both were undressed from the waist down.

Ripped Out Woman’s Hair – Spat at Police

The arrest of 37-year-old Mohammad Hamed Alshaer from Libya was violent. According to information in the legal documents and police description, the man resisted, thrashed his body, spat, and lunged at the police officers.

Only after pepper spray was used could the patrol get him under control and put on handcuffs and fetters.

The woman was taken to hospital. She was severely upset and initially had difficulty explaining what had happened to her. She was also bloody and had several visible injuries.

At the hospital, injuries were documented over large parts of her body. Among other things, hair had been ripped out from her head. She also received emergency psychiatric help after the incident.

Fined Previously for Sexual Harassment

The 37-year-old Arab stated that he is homeless and had lived in the park during the summer. He claims to make ends meet by redeeming cans and spends most of his money on drugs.

The man has previous convictions. In 2018, he was convicted of sexual harassment after grabbing a Swedish woman’s arms and kissing her at a nightclub in Malmö. The court deemed fines as sufficient punishment for that crime.

Earlier this year, he was also convicted of grossly negligent driving after an incident in central Malmö in January 2024. He ran 12 red lights and nearly collided with four cars. The sentence was four months in prison.

Defense: “Wanted to Give Her Love”

37-year-old Mohammad Hamed Alshaer from Libya is now charged with aggravated rape, violent resistance, and drug offenses. He denies the rape but admits to the drug charge.

In interrogation, he gives a partially similar account of events as the woman, but claims her actions preceded what later happened.

According to the man’s own story, the woman had run past him several times that evening, thereby “inspiring him” to commit the rape.

Upon arrest, he reportedly told police he understood that what he had done was wrong. He explained his behavior by saying he hadn’t had sex for several years and had decided to “give her love.”

The prosecutor has police bodycam footage as evidence against the Arab, documenting the arrest. The videos also contain documentation of the woman’s initial statements after the assault. In addition, DNA from the woman was found on the accused man’s body.
