The EU is behind plans to carry out a coup in Georgia. This claim comes from Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.

The statement was made last week when Papuashvili visited Istanbul, Turkey, to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Spring Assembly. During the event, he praised the development in Georgia and in the neighboring countries of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“The South Caucasus, once considered unstable, is now becoming an increasingly stable and predictable region,” he said, according to the Azerbaijani news agency APA.

The EU Identified as a Threat

According to World Bank figures, Georgia’s GDP has grown by more than 50 percent since the pandemic. This strong growth is something Georgians can rejoice in.

But according to Papuashvili, there is a major cloud on the horizon, spelled EU.

“Could there be a greater shame for the European Union, which has gradually shifted from being a peace project to one characterized by anxiety, hostility, and confrontation?” he asked rhetorically during the congress in Istanbul, as reported by APA.

Accused of Coup Plans

The Georgian Speaker believes that malicious plans are being made to overthrow the country’s ruling party, Georgian Dream. And that the conspirators are sitting in Brussels.

“The goal is to promote anti-democratic processes in Georgia, topple the government, and bring puppets to power. In the past, such projects were funded by the former US administration, but after Donald Trump and his team came to power, a number of organizations were shut down and the financing was cut. Currently, all of this is handled by the European Union,” he claims.

In Georgia, there is fear of a Western-backed coup similar to the one that hit Ukraine in 2014. And the aim of such a coup would be to involve the country in the ongoing war in Ukraine, thereby opening a “second front” against Russia.
