As if all the issues electric cars cause for owners, repair shops, and insurance companies weren’t enough, it now turns out that electric vehicles cause even more damage to the roads.

With spring arriving, the thaw is lifting from the roads, revealing potholes. According to Riksförbundet M Sverige, formerly the Swedish Motorists’ Association, heavy traffic and electric cars are wearing down roads more than petrol and diesel vehicles.

“Electric cars are heavier because their batteries are so heavy. This puts more pressure on the car,” says Gerd Larsson, chair of Riksförbundet M Sverige in Katrineholm, Vingåker, and Flen, to Sveriges Radio.

Keep Your Distance

Driving over a pothole can in the worst case cause major damage, and Larsson has some advice for the country’s motorists.

“If you have suffered damage from a pothole, it is possible to apply for compensation. And when you see a pothole, drive carefully above all, and keep your distance from surrounding cars.”
