During the night leading into Saturday local time, the US Air Force carried out several strikes against what it claims are military facilities in Venezuela. The attacks come after the situation between the two countries has escalated in recent times, with President Donald Trump ordering the seizure of oil tankers leaving the South American nation.

Donald Trump has repeatedly portrayed himself as a president who works for peace. At the same time, yet another country can now be added to the list of states that have been subject to American bombings under his leadership. This time, focus is on Venezuela, governed by Nicolás Maduro and accused of harboring gangs and guerrillas that oversee drug trafficking to the US. Previously, military operations have been conducted in Iran, Yemen, Nigeria, and Syria, among others.

There are differing opinions on whether the US attacks, including those on boats in the Caribbean Sea, actually constitute a real threat. The US has also faced criticism for killing people on board boats without being certain of what their activity involved. These operations take place in the context of Donald Trump’s declared war on drugs entering the US.

However, critics argue that Venezuela is not a significant transit country for drug smuggling in the same way as Colombia, where a large portion of cocaine production takes place with guerrillas and cartels transporting it to the US and Europe. When it comes to fentanyl, several analysts instead point to China as the country of origin, but believe it is much more likely that the substance enters the US via Mexico.

At the same time, some question whether the White House’s actions are really aimed at combating drug smuggling. Instead, it is claimed that the US interest is more about securing influence over parts of Venezuela’s oil reserves—a motive that Trump himself has addressed repeatedly. According to these observers, pressure is now being applied by threats or hints at a possible military intervention.

Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest armada in South American history. It will only grow, and the shock for them will be something they’ve never experienced before—until they return to the United States of America all oil, land, and other assets they have previously stolen from us.

During the night leading into Saturday, local time, President Donald Trump ordered attacks on Venezuela, which reportedly targeted military facilities. This is reported by CBS News. An American official also confirms to The Wall Street Journal that the US is carrying out a military operation in the country.

On social media, several videos are circulating showing explosions in the capital Caracas and other cities.

Maduro: “The Aim Is to Seize Venezuela’s Resources”

In light of these events, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has declared a state of emergency in the country, according to an official statement. The government strongly criticizes the US and describes the American attacks as a serious military aggression as well as a breach of the UN Charter.

In the statement, the government elaborates on its view of the US motive behind the operation:

The aim of this attack is to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, especially its oil and minerals, in an attempt to forcibly break the nation’s political independence. They will not succeed.
