The national-conservative party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has recently grown to become one of Germany’s most popular parties in opinion polls. When party leader Alice Weidel spoke in Hungary, she painted a bleak picture of Europe’s development, governed by “:censored:6:cdd6bbaa89:ist elites” in Brussels who are destroying member states—while praising Hungary, led by Viktor Orbán, as a role model. She also launched a harsh attack against the EU’s support for Ukraine, which she claims only prolongs a war “that is not ours.”
The speech took place during the conservative CPAC forum in Budapest last weekend, where Weidel was one of the speakers. She thanked Orbán for hosting and described Hungary as “a beacon of hope in Europe.” Orbán also did not hold back, referring to the AfD leader as “the bravest political leader in Europe.”
In her speech, Weidel claimed that Europe is once again at a pivotal historical moment. She warned of a future marked by “more violence, more lies, and less freedom,” contrasting this with what she described as the continental foundations—“Greek philosophy, Roman governance, and Christian tradition.”
According to the AfD leader, these laid the groundwork for civil rights, freedom of speech and press, as well as self-determination for individuals and nations.

Alice Weidel emphasized that these values are not just abstract ideas, but “convictions that unite us,” rooted in the protection of the family, respect for private property, and a free market economy. At the same time, she stressed that “only the sovereign democratic nation-state provides a sufficiently secure framework for these values to endure”—something, she argued, we should not take for granted.

The AfD leader also drew on historical events, mentioning both the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the workers’ uprising in East Germany in 1953 as examples of the price of freedom.
– Germans and Hungarians, two proud nations, know exactly what it costs to define freedom—the price is worth paying, she said, adding:
– We Germans will never forget what we owe the Hungarian nation.

Weidel: Globalist Elites Rule the EU
In modern politics, Weidel aimed sharp criticism at the EU—which she has previously compared to the Soviet Union—and internal threats to freedom. According to her, the danger this time comes from within, from “:censored:6:cdd6bbaa89:ist elites in Brussels and in far too many European capitals.”

Weidel accused these political forces of “flooding our country with illegal mass immigration; they force our own people to feed, house, and prioritize these masses, while crime explodes, terrorism stalks our streets, and Islamic extremism gains a foothold. And by doing this, they steal the soul of our European countries.”
She also launched a scathing attack and summarized what she sees as the “:censored:6:cdd6bbaa89:ist elites'” agenda within the EU, which she claims overwhelms member states with regulations and pressure to remake the continent.
– They create apocalyptic panic around so-called man-made climate change and use it as the perfect excuse to choke our industry, destroy our energy security, drive entire populations into poverty, and introduce an eco-socialist command economy that enormously increases their own power, said Alice Weidel, and continued:
– They demand that we accept the crazy notions of dozens or hundreds of genders, that we call men women and women men. They confuse the minds of our own children.
Suppressing Freedom of Speech and Interfering in Elections
According to Alice Weidel, “the elite in Brussels” hides behind a pretext of fighting disinformation, but in reality aims to take control of member states and silence dissenters.
– And yet that’s not enough for them. They wage a permanent war against freedom of expression, they hunt citizens who dare criticize this authoritarian course. They hide behind a cynical cover of fighting disinformation in order to persecute parties and governments that put people’s vital interests first, Weidel said and continued:
– They do not even hesitate to interfere in national elections to manipulate the secret will of free citizens, because they fear above all what people may freely decide. In Brussels, they seem to believe that Europe’s citizens have unlimited patience—they are wrong.
“Sending Billions to a Corrupt Regime”
She also sharply criticized the EU’s stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its fifth year. According to the AfD leader, the EU stands by Ukraine’s side no matter what the country does or how it behaves.

Weidel claims that Ukraine has committed acts of sabotage against the EU’s energy infrastructure, most likely referring to the Nord Stream pipeline attacks, and she has made it clear that Ukraine will be held responsible when the AfD comes to power.

In her speech, the AfD leader described Ukraine as “one of the most corrupt regimes on earth” and accused Brussels of prolonging the conflict, which she says does not even concern the EU, but is a conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
– They pile debt upon debt upon debt and send countless billions to one of the most corrupt regimes on earth, Ukraine, to prolong a war that isn’t ours. It is not ours, Weidel asserted.

The Numbers Show: Growing Support for Nationalists
In her speech, she highlighted what she sees as growing dissatisfaction among Europe’s populations. She pointed to the rising support for nationalist parties in Europe, citing AfD’s own numbers as well as the strong support for Viktor Orbán as signs that patience is running out.
Weidel, whose party in opinion polls is alongside the leading Christian Democratic party CDU, stated that AfD is the only opposition party in Germany and aims to form the next government, even if other parties in the Bundestag refuse to cooperate with them.

In her closing remarks, Weidel returned to the theme of struggle and freedom.
– We will have to fight once again for our freedom and self-determination. The means will be different, but the courage and determination—the iron will—must be exactly the same as among our ancestors.
She also emphasized the kinship between like-minded movements in Europe and said that we truly consider ourselves lucky to stand side by side against the EU machinery in Brussels, which is trying to seize control of member states’ sovereignty.
The speech concluded with a greeting to Viktor Orbán and his party Fidesz ahead of Hungary’s upcoming elections on April 12.
– We wish you all the best, God bless you, God bless Hungary, God bless Germany, and God bless a free Europe, said Alice Weidel.
