Heavy road barriers, or multi-faceted barriers as they are called by some, have become a common sight at major events in European countries that have had open borders with the Middle East and North Africa. In Stockholm, they are already in place, and now it’s Jönköping’s turn to prepare for multicultural events.

Strolling around at popular events, especially Christmas markets, in Western Europe without risking one’s life seems to be something of the past. Stockholm has been using concrete lions for some time, and now it’s Jönköping’s turn.

The terrorist attack in Stockholm in 2017 prompted municipalities to review their security measures. A total of 32 concrete cubes will be placed in the city’s central areas. According to the municipality’s business development manager Tommy Girdic, their purpose is to reduce speed and increase safety for pedestrians.

Sven Rydell, the municipality’s business manager and CEO of Jönköping city, says that the municipality’s safety work is specifically linked to the risk of terrorist threats.

– When we saw that there were risks at the national level, we wanted to ensure a safe environment in a place where many people move every day. But I want to clarify that there is no elevated threat here now, he told Jönköpings-Posten in October.
