This week, the national broadcaster reported that “House Burping” has become a new trend on social media in the USA. The whole idea is to… air out for a while.

It was SVT Nyheter Skåne that found a social media trend interesting enough for the Swedish audience to feature it in a segment.

House Burping, letting the house “burp” by opening a window for a while, is presented as a new health trend in the USA.

It is further said that “the trend is said to originate from an old German tradition called ‘lüften,’ which simply involves opening windows to air out the home.”

During the pandemic, then-Chancellor Angela Merkel talked about how opening windows was a good way to reduce the spread of infection.

Doctors Give the Thumbs Up

For comment, SVT spoke with Carl-Johan Fraenkel, senior consultant in hospital hygiene at Skåne University Hospital.

– From an infection perspective, there’s a point to it, he told the national broadcaster.

According to Fraenkel, studies show that opening windows in schools leads to fewer infections, and he suggests that in winter, a short airing is sufficient.

– If it’s cold outside and warm inside, the air is replaced more quickly.
