Right now, COP29, the 29th UN climate conference, is taking place in Azerbaijan. On the orders of President Javier Milei, the Argentine delegation has withdrawn and will not participate in the ongoing negotiations.

Argentina’s undersecretary for the environment, Ana Lamas, the country’s top representative for climate and nature after Milei downgraded the ministry, confirms that the country is withdrawing from COP29.

– That’s correct. We have instructions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs not to participate any longer. That’s all I can tell you, she says.

However, Lamas did not respond to the question of whether Argentina plans to also leave the Paris Agreement.

President Milei has been trying to get Argentina back on track after years of mismanagement and has made some progress. He describes himself as a liberal libertarian and detests all forms of political correctness.

He has dismissed the alleged climate crisis as a “socialist lie” and has previously hinted that the country will leave the Paris Agreement.

He is a close friend of both Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
