Member of Parliament Receives 81,400 a Month – Still Doesn’t Have to Pay Debt

The Left Party’s newly elected Member of Parliament Mohamed Abdukardir Ali has a debt of over 163,000 kronor and has been under debt restructuring since 2022. Despite now receiving a parliamentary salary of 81,400 kronor per month, he currently still does not need to start repaying the debt.

The debt restructuring was decided in 2022 and covers a total of 40 items. Among the creditors are Region Dalarna, Försäkringskassan, CSN, and several debt collection agencies.

When the decision was made, Ali was unemployed full-time and received an activity allowance of 10,710 kronor per month. The payment plan was then set to zero kronor during the five years of the debt restructuring.

Since then, his financial situation has changed significantly. As of the new parliamentary term, he receives the same base salary as other Members of Parliament, which in 2026 amounts to 81,400 kronor per month. However, this does not mean that the debt restructuring is automatically changed.

Cannot Reconsider

The Swedish Enforcement Authority states that the agency cannot reconsider an already decided debt restructuring on its own initiative. For that to happen, either the debtor themself or any of the creditors must request a review. According to TV4, no such request had yet been submitted.

The Enforcement Authority’s own rules state that a debt restructuring can be reviewed if the financial situation has improved significantly. As a general rule, this means that the debtor keeps several thousand kronor more each month.

New Claim for Almost 15,000 Kronor

At the same time, another payment order has been registered. According to TV4, on September 22 a new claim of nearly 15,000 kronor was filed by the Swedish Motor Insurers Association.

The debt restructuring runs for five years. For a creditor who wants it changed, a request for reconsideration must be made within the time frame applicable to the debt restructuring.

The Enforcement Authority also states that the agency is not allowed to perform its own financial checks in order to change the decision on its own initiative.

Ali has also requested two weeks’ leave from his assignment in parliament.
