A few years after former Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt left politics, and made a less than popular appearance as chairman of the Swedish Football Association, a new generation of Reinfeldt is now entering politics.

After serving in the municipal council in Solna, he went on to study in the USA, but now 31-year-old Gustaf Reinfeldt is back in Sweden and is set to take over as opposition councilor in Sundbyberg. In this role, he aims to attract back female urban voters, a group that the Moderates lost in 2022.

One of the reasons for the decline within this group, he believes, is that the party has focused too much on security issues and has been too poor at signaling hope and optimism for the future. Another reason he suspects is the cooperation with the Sweden Democrats.

Like his father, he does not seem to see immigration itself as a problem but rather integration, and he believes that it is society that has “failed with an integration policy that helps people to integrate into society”.

Rejects SD cooperation

Cooperating with the Sweden Democrats at the national level is not something Gustaf Reinfeldt likes and he does not want to have anything to do with the party at the local level. He sees it as a necessary evil.

When it comes to the Tidö agreement, it is something he has not even read, but at the same time, he states that the overall content provides solutions to the societal problems that exist.

Being a Reinfeldt, he believes, is both a burden and an asset in politics.

– It’s both. I know that there are many preconceived notions about who I am based on that, both positive and negative. My ambition is that people should form their own opinion when they meet me, he tells DN.
