A video posted on social media by Social Democrat politician Dekan Izat has sparked strong criticism from the Sweden Democrats.

In the video, Izat raps about how “Sweden went completely crazy, bratte, before Arin Karapet became a house******.” The last word is censored in the video, but according to the Sweden Democrats (SD), it refers to the expression “house blatte.” Karapet was elected to parliament for the Moderates but has since left the party for the Sweden Democrats.

Christopher Björk, second deputy chair of SD Karlstad, told Värmlands Folkblad that the term is based on a racist notion where people with foreign backgrounds are expected to have certain political views. Anyone who goes against these expectations risks, according to Björk, being regarded as a traitor to their own group.

SD now demands that the Social Democrats clearly distance themselves from Izat’s actions. Björk also wants the party to withdraw its political confidence in Izat and that he resign from his political assignments.

Izat rejects the criticism and claims that he never used the word the Sweden Democrats say the censored term refers to. He therefore maintains he is forced to defend himself against a statement he did not make.

Has strong support

When asked if it is obvious which word is meant regardless of the censorship, Izat answers that this is not the case. He argues it is unreasonable to attribute to him a word he never actually said.

The Social Democrat politician also highlights his commitment against racism and says that he himself has been subjected to racism. According to Izat, he still has strong support from people within the party.

When asked if, in retrospect, he should have refrained from publishing the video, Izat does not change his view. He maintains that he should not have to answer for a word he claims he never uttered.
