Politician Suspended for University Plagiarism to Lead Falun Education Board

Social Democrat Diyar Cicek is to chair Falun's children and education committee, years after being suspended from Uppsala University's law programme for plagiarism, Samnytt reports.
The appointment follows an agreement by the Social Democrats and Moderates to govern the municipality after the 2026 election. Cicek stood second on the Social Democrat council list.
The disciplinary case concerned an assignment submitted during the autumn term of 2018. According to Samnytt's account, substantial parts matched work submitted by another student the previous year.
Cicek appealed, but the administrative court upheld the university disciplinary board's decision. The judgment said sentences and entire paragraphs were largely identical and that those passages constituted plagiarism.
Samnytt reports that he had completed 150 of the programme's 270 credits when the publication contacted the university in 2021. He told local newspaper Falu-Kuriren earlier this year that he had resumed his studies.
In a Facebook post about the new committee role, Cicek expressed gratitude and humility, saying the assignment concerned young people. The role makes him the senior elected politician on the committee responsible for children's services and education, not the municipality's chief education official.
