A woman in her 50s was stabbed to death on Thursday in a residential area in Karlskrona. A man in his 40s is now in custody, suspected of murder. According to new information from a church in the city, the woman was a Ukrainian refugee.

The alarm about a violent crime on Snapphanevägen in the Galgamarken district came shortly after 11 am. Police and ambulance were dispatched to the scene, where a severely injured woman was found. A man and a knife were also found in the area. The man was later arrested, suspected of murder.

It was residents in the area who heard screams and saw two people on the ground shortly before they alerted emergency services about the then injured woman who died shortly thereafter. The police are now investigating the relationship the perpetrator had with the woman.

According to the Swedish Prosecution Authority, it is not believed to be a case of insanity but there is a connection between the individuals.

In the evening on Thursday, mourners gathered at Emanuelskyrkan in Karlskrona, where a memorial service was held for the murdered woman. According to the pastor, the woman had fled the war in Ukraine.

– It’s terrible, a tragedy. She was a fantastic woman who really meant well. A mother. I am grateful that I got to know her, says Pastor Walla Karlsson to Expressen.

By Sunday at the latest, the prosecutor is expected to decide whether the suspected murderer should be remanded in custody.
