The ongoing developments in the Middle East conflict and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz have taken several new turns in recent days. While Israel and Iran have once again exchanged attacks, U.S. President Donald Trump claims that the parties are nearing a new agreement that could help reduce tensions in the region.

Over the weekend, Israel launched new strikes against targets in Iran, which were followed by Iranian counterattacks. The events marked the most serious escalation since the ceasefire reached earlier this spring. The renewed fighting triggered fears that the conflict could once again escalate into a broader regional war.

Trump reacted strongly to the new attacks and urged both sides to show restraint. According to several reports, the president has also warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against launching new offensives that risk undermining ongoing diplomatic contacts with Iran.

Meanwhile, negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue. On Monday, Trump stated that he believes a new deal with Iran may be near and described the process as entering its final stages.

The president has previously said that any agreement must include measures to restore free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as well as address Iran’s nuclear program.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the conflict’s most sensitive point. Iran has restricted traffic through the waterway and presented plans for new transit fees for ships passing through the area. The U.S. opposes this and has at the same time maintained a blockade of Iranian ports.

The situation has led to a sharp decrease in maritime traffic through the strait, which normally handles a significant portion of the world’s oil exports.

Despite the renewed fighting, Trump claims that both Israel and Iran are fundamentally interested in an immediate ceasefire and that final peace talks are ongoing. If the negotiations are successful, it could pave the way for a gradual normalization of the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, which since March has been the center of one of this year’s most serious international crises.
