Tiktok has in recent years grown to become one of the most popular social media platforms. In the USA, the Chinese app has around 170 million users, but at present it looks like these users will have to find a new platform.
It is the US Supreme Court that on Friday gave the green light to a law that bans Tiktok in the country. The background is that the app is accused of collecting information about users, which is something that both authorities and politicians in the USA argue could be used by the Chinese government for espionage, as well as spreading propaganda.
As a result, the USA has demanded that the Chinese company Bytedance, which owns Tiktok, sell the video platform to an American owner. Tiktok has opposed the demand and defended itself by saying that it violates freedom of speech.
American media speculates that a potential sale of Tiktok would have a price tag of 50 billion dollars, which is about 560 billion kronor.
On Friday, the US Supreme Court announced that a shutdown of the app does not violate the First Amendment of the Constitution, which now opens the door for a ban. At the same time, the USA will have a new president next week, and it is still unclear how incoming President Donald Trump will act on the issue.
So far, Trump has only announced that he will make a decision in the near future.
