The government has decided that Swedish taxpayers will be involved in purchasing a new air defense system, but not for Sweden, but for Romania.

Romania ordered seven American Patriot air defense systems in 2017. The first system was delivered in 2020, and two more in 2022.

However, during the fall of 2024, the Romanians were persuaded to send one of their three new air defense systems to Ukraine in exchange for funds to purchase a new air defense system.

Swedes contributing financially

The setup is called Immediate Action on Air Defence (IAAD), led by Germany, and aims to attract more war-skeptical NATO countries to support the Ukrainian cause by offering money.

Swedish taxpayers are supporting the project. The Swedish contribution amounts to 300 million Swedish kronor, as stated by the government on its website.

In addition to Germany and Sweden, Norway is also involved. Norway is donating a total of 1.4 billion kronor to Romania so that the country can purchase new American weapons after transferring a Patriot battery to Ukraine.
