A nursing assistant at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala is charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual harassment against a woman who was admitted as a patient at the hospital. The nursing assistant is from Afghanistan and, according to the population register, is 24 years old.

The sexual assaults occurred on three occasions in December 2021. On two occasions, the man inserted his fingers into the woman’s genitals while she was hospitalized, which is classified as rape, and on one occasion, he touched the woman’s buttocks, which is classified as sexual harassment.

The prosecutor states in the indictment that the 24-year-old nursing assistant took advantage of the fact that the woman “was in a particularly vulnerable situation due to illness and that he induced the victim to participate by exploiting the fact that she was dependent on him.”

In addition to the raped woman’s own account, the prosecutor also has witness statements from other healthcare personnel to support the charges. The accused man denies the allegations.

The 24-year-old Afghan arrives in Sweden during the migrant crisis and is granted a residence permit in August 2016. He has no relatives in Sweden.

In November 2019, he gets a job as a nursing assistant at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala. He works there until May 31 this year. Just a few weeks before he leaves Akademiska Hospital, the 24-year-old is granted Swedish citizenship.

As the Afghan man has been granted citizenship, he cannot be deported from Sweden if convicted, according to current legislation. This is despite the fact that he has no other ties to the country and despite the fact that the crimes were committed before he obtained Swedish citizenship.
