Over the weekend, Expressen published an article about the “three Swedes” who have been sentenced to death in Iraq. This follows a high-profile gang murder where a prominent criminal figure, raised in Sweden, was shot dead in traffic in Baghdad. However, the perpetrators are not “Swedes”; all of them have immigrant backgrounds and were born abroad.

It was on January 8th last year when gang leader Mustafa “Benzema” Aljiburi, who grew up in Uppsala, was shot to death at an intersection in Baghdad. The murder received significant attention as it was captured on film by several witnesses.

According to Expressen, the Swedish men recently sentenced to death in Iraq are Gjuljan Prenga, Mustafa Albo Dragh, and Jakob Lundgren. The latter has a Swedish name, but is he Swedish?

According to the Swedish Tax Agency, the man has changed his name. Jakob Lundgren’s previous name is Ali Khairi Ismaeel.

Here are the “Swedes”

Samnytt has taken a closer look at the background of these criminal gang members.

Gjuljan Prenga, 20, came to Sweden as a refugee from Albania over ten years ago, along with his parents and three siblings.

Gjuljan has previously been convicted of serious weapons offenses, multiple drug offenses, violations of the knife law, driving without a license, and traffic violations.

Mustafa Albo Dragh, 24, was born in Syria and immigrated to Sweden in 2003.

Mustafa has previously been convicted of aiding extortion, multiple minor drug offenses, violations of the knife law, and drunk driving. Furthermore, he has been charged with kidnapping, attempted extortion, and unlawful deprivation of liberty but was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Jakob Lundgren (formerly known as Ali Khairi Ismaeel), 25, was born in Iraq.

Jakob/Ali has previously been convicted of assault, violence against a public official, threats against a public official, multiple drug offenses, and violations of the knife law.

The Iraqi court has sentenced the three men to death by hanging. The sentence is under appeal.
