On Monday, the government proposed that the law on secret data surveillance should become permanent and that the police will be able to gather information even if there is no suspected person. According to Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M), it is essential to regain control from criminal gangs.
The law on secret data surveillance was introduced in 2020 as a temporary measure to give the police the ability to, for example, break into mobile phones or accounts on communication services in order to access information related to criminal activities. The government now wants to see the law become permanent and also allow the police to gather more types of information.
– For example, being able to turn on a camera on a computer to see who is using the computer when a sexual offense against a child is committed over the internet.
Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) stated at the press conference that it took New York ten years to regain control from criminal gangs and in Denmark, approximately the same amount of time. Strömmer is convinced that Sweden can do the same, but it requires advancing positions with new laws.
– We are two years into our ten-year journey, Strömmer said.
