Last autumn, rumors began circulating that the telecom giant Ericsson was considering moving its headquarters from the multicultural district of Kista in northwest Stockholm. The reason is said to be the increased insecurity in the area with staff feeling unsafe. Now, the real estate company Corem announces that Ericsson has terminated parts of its premises.

It is stated in the press release that Ericsson has terminated premises equivalent to 33,000 square meters and will retain 56,000 square meters in Kista from the end of 2025.

Last autumn, sources for Dagens industri reported that Ericsson had been considering a move from Kista for some time. This is because the situation with insecurity in the district is said to be so serious. Among other things, employees are escorted by security personnel to the subway in the evening.

Per Norlander, chief negotiator for Sveriges Ingenjörer at Ericsson Sweden, confirmed that the question of new premises is raised regularly and that “it’s about the area around Kista being a bit shabby”.

“The staff experience insecurity before and after normal working hours, and it can be tricky to attract high-profile competence there. We also had a wave of robberies a few years ago,” Norlander told Di.

Difficult to recruit to Kista

Ericsson’s CEO Börje Ekholm diplomatically stated that it’s about the company considering where the operations should be located “to attract the right talents”.

“We always consider where it’s right to have our operations. It’s in Sweden and it’s abroad too. Where should we be and where should we be to attract the right talents for the future,” Ekholm told TT.
