The bus driver whose double-decker overturned on Route 25 between Växjö and Alvesta on Monday afternoon has been detained. He is suspected of causing another person’s death, causing bodily harm, and reckless driving.

The express bus on route 845 between Växjö and Ljungby was carrying school students and commuters when it left the road shortly after 4:30 p.m. and ended up on its side in a ditch. The accident occurred between the Hanaslöv and Kvälleberg exits.

An 18-year-old man was killed. Of the 46 injured, 14 were treated in hospital overnight. Region Kronoberg has activated emergency procedures, and crisis support has been arranged at the hospital, health centers, and the cultural center Grand in Ljungby.

The driver escaped without serious injuries. He was questioned during the night and was subsequently informed of the suspicion of a crime. The police emphasize that the suspicion of reckless driving has been raised for investigative reasons, in order to determine what caused the accident.

The bus had recently passed inspection

Police state on their website that there is currently no explanation for the accident. The bus has been towed and seized, and technicians have worked at the accident site overnight.

A 17-year-old girl who was on the bus told Expressen that the bus swayed back and forth before it suddenly overturned.

The bus company Connect Bus, which operates regional traffic buses in Kronoberg, says there are no known technical faults with the bus. It had recently been inspected without any remarks, according to the company’s operations manager Andreas Ehrenborg.
